~:§:~

On this page we present a few remarkable discoveries we made in U.S. archive sources.

In a scanned version of the journal the Adam's Sentinel from Gettysburg we can read in the edition of december 20th 1858 that in St.-Louis on december 8th of that year dr. Elward Van Der Roocke was killed by Henry Linhof ...

He enlisted on october 14 1864 and was discharged on june 5 1865, the reason was chronic dysentery.

J. , Wilhelmina and Jacobina van den Roocke (1868)

On the website of the Immigrant Transscribers Guild we can find the transscription Phil Buckley made of the passenger list drawn by John Webster, captain of the SS Erin, which sailed from Liverpool, England via Queenstown, Ireland to New York, and arrived there on may 11 1868.

the SS Erin

This list begins with the official declaration by John K. Webster that this list was drawn accurately and truthfully :

I, John K. Webster, Master of the S.S. Erin, do solemnly, sincerely, and truly declare that the following List or Manifest, subscribed by me, and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs of the Collection District of New York, is a full and perfect List of all the Passengers taken on board the said S.S. Erin at L'pool and Q'town, from which Ports the said S.S. Erin has now arrived; and that on said List is truly designated the age, the sex, and the occupation of each of said passengers, the part of the vessel occupied by each during the passage, the country to which each belongs, and also the country of which it is intended by each to become an inhabitant; and that said List or Manifest truly sets forth the number of said Passengers who have died on said Voyage and the names and ages of those who died.
So help me God.
(signed) John K. Webster.

The passengers with numbers 530, 531 and 532 on board of the SS Erin were J. van den Roocke, a 26 year old man, Wilhelmina van den Roocke, a 20 year old woman and Jacobina van den Roocke, a male (?!) infant, all three originated from Germany.
They had the intention of becoming U.S. citizens.

We notice this list contains a few remarkable features.
John K. Webster registered all passengers, as well men, women and children as laborers...
Like the van den Roocke family, the de Visser, Hellema, Wiggers, de Smid, de Boer, Koops, Haasman and Schoumaker families, whith obvious Dutch names, were all registered as originated from Germany...
Phill Buckley confined us his experience in transscribing passenger lists has tought him the captains often did not pay too much attention to the details in these lists, such as profession or place of origin odf the passengers.

Since the van de Roocke family name in Belgium has changed into Verroken at the end of the 17th century, this van den Roocke family probably belonged to the branch which emigrated to Holland at the end of the 16th century.
At the moment, we haven't found the exact connection yet.
