During our search for possible diiferent ways of spelling of the Verroken family name, Erik Verroken stumbled on the surname Verrocq.
We made contact with this family, of which most members were living in the region around the city of Ath.
Since their name is written with a double "r", and the fact that this family was living in the neighbourhood of Ath, high expectations did not seem inappropriate, and we started to search which Verroken had emigrated to Hainaut somewhere in the 17th or 18th century, and had seen his name change to Verrocq ...
A day in the Ath city archives revealed the Verrocq family name is an amputated form of the surname Verrocqt...
And a few generation further back in time the Verrocqt or Veroqt family name turned out to be a phonetic interpretation of the surname Verhoogt.
The Verrocq family is not related to the Verroken family, but to the Verhoogt family.
The results of this investigation show very clearly how important it is to know the original form of a family name, before one can think of explaining its meaning or suspect a genealogic connection.
